. BAFFONERO 2008

. 97/100 _ ‘Best Red Wine of the Year’- Luca Maroni
. 90/100 _ Wine Spectator
. Finalist for ‘3 Goblets’_ Gambero Rosso

Born to challenge Masseto, the greatest of the Maremma wines (and one of the worlds great wines), Baffonero confirms its incredible potential at only the second vintage. After the first harvest of 2007 it was crowned with 93/100 points from Wine Spectator, Three ‘Goblets’ from Gambero Rosso and the ‘Sun’ award from the Veronelli Guide.
This 100% Merlot from the Tuscan Maremma producer Rocca di Frassinello is created by applying the utmost rigour at every stage of its production, beginning in the vineyard where three preliminary ‘green’ harvests are made.
It is also by virtue of this careful work that Baffonero 2008 was able to achieve such recognition from Luca Maroni leading Italian wine expert, whose long career began in partnership with Luigi Veronelli in the mid 1980’s with the launch of Ex Vitis, the first Italian publication dedicated to wine. Since that time he has been responsible for a many and varied initiatives, the best known being the Annuario dei Migliori Vini Italiani, one of the most important annals in the Italian agricultural sector for wine appraisal. In the 2011 edition, Luca Maroni gave the top score of 97/100 points to Baffonero 2008, making it his Best Italian Wine of the Year an award which, notwithstanding its ‘youth’, confirms this Maremma Merlot as a wine with a great future.

If Baffonero is a wine with a great future, then I Sodi di San Niccolò is a wine whose name ranks among the most illustrious in the history of Italian wines.
Over the years this wine has achieved unprecedented success and is a shining star of Tuscan wines from native varieties, consistently attaining the highest points from Wine Spectator. It has twice been classified in the top 100 wines in the world by this prestigious review at 5th and 24th place.
Every vintage of I Sodi is accompanied by a new clutch of prizes for this fascinating blend of Sangioveto (Castellare di Castellina's own Sangiovese clone) and Malvasia Nera. The innate elegance of I Sodi di San Niccolò 2006 has unfailingly moved the severest of critics and gone on to become one of the most acclaimed of vintages overall.
Gambero Rosso is the most prestigious Italian examiner and wine guide and applies a rating from 1 to 3 Goblets. The Gambero Rosso judges awarded 3 ‘Goblets’ to I Sodi di San Niccolò 2006 with the additional ‘plus’ commendation assigned to only 35 wines, the same score having been achieved by the 2005 vintage.
Even more extraordinary is the 95+ score for I Sodi 2006 from an en primeur tasting (therefore scored with the utmost caution) by Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, magazine. The tasting notes by Antonio Galloni, in charge of the Italian category, speak lovingly of "the way Malvasia Nera confers darkness, richness and power to the Sangiovese, but without abandoning a pure-bred Tuscan expression of sheer class". Galloni notes that "beautifully delineated aromatics meld into a breathtaking array of dark fruit, crushed rocks, smoke, tar, minerals and flowers in this totally thrilling Tuscan red. I Sodi has a track record of developing beautifully in bottle and have no doubt that will be the case here".
Wine Spectator has assigned I Sodi 2006 the high score of 94/100 and the la Guida Oro i Vini di Veronelli has, at the time of writing, included it as a wine which merits the ‘Three Super Stars’ award, an accolade bestowed only on wines surpassing a 93/100 rating and therefore among the candidates to receive the guides highest accolade, Veronelli’s ‘Sun’. Likewise, the Guida 2000 Vini dell'AIS - Associazione Italiana Sommeliers, which rates on a scale of 1 to 5 ‘Clusters’ (of grapes) has judged I Sodi di San Niccolò 2006 to be worthy of its highest points score.
