TWO DOMINI CASTELLARE DI CASTELLINA WINES AMONG IAN D’AGATA’S ITALIAN WINES OF THE YEAR 2023

Also this year Ian D’Agata of Terroir Sense has drawn up his personal list of the best Italian wines for 2023.

Among the “most memorable wines of the year” which, according to the authoritative wine writer “for one reason or another, are worth seeking out” there are two produced by the Domini Castellare di Castellina group: the 2020 vintages of the Chianti Classico Il Poggiale by Castellare di Castellina, estate located in the Chianti Classico area, and the Nero d’Avola Versace by Feudi del Pisciotto, in Sicily. The two labels are among the 130 wines considered “remarkably good, which convey the nuances of a specific grape variety, or of an exposure or a soil or an altitude or a microclimate or a history or a tradition particularly well. In brief, wines that have important stories to tell”, writes Ian D’Agata.

CC Poggiale Ian4
The Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggiale is obtained from a single vineyard in Castellare di Castellina and is highly appreciated for its elegance and typicality. A wine that expresses the enormous potential of Sangioveto, a special Sangiovese clone planted in Castellina. Intense and lively ruby colour, on the nose it reveals the typical hints of violet and cherry, accompanied by a mineral note. On the palate it opens immediately with freshness and flavor while, in the finish, it offers fragrant fruity notes that make the sip very pleasant. Recommended with grilled meat dishes, such as Chianina steak, or with game, it is also interesting with aged cheeses.

Nero dAvola Ian3
Nero d’Avola is the grape variety that best expresses the oenological character of Sicily. The Nero d’Avola Versace wine by Feudi del Pisciotto, obtained from the best estate selections, expresses in absolute purity the extraordinary elegance and ability to evolve over time of this variety. Intense ruby red colour, the nose opens with delicate notes of red berry fruit such as blackcurrants, blueberries and cherries. Full, velvety and persistent, it conquers with its elegant harmony. It pairs well with red meats, game and mature, tasty cheeses.
