HARVEST 2020: FROM TUSCANY TO SICILY IT WILL BE AN ESPECIALLY MEMORABLE VINTAGE

“The 2020 harvest will be remembered not only because it took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, but above all because the vegetative cycle was perfect as rarely happens”. With these words Alessandro Cellai, oenologist and CEO of the wineries Castellare di Castellina, in the Chianti Classico, Rocca di Frassinello in the Tuscan Maremma, Feudi del Pisciotto and Gurra di Mare, in Sicily, describes the harvest still in progress in the 4 estates.

Feudi del Pisciotto vendemmia

“I am sure it will be one of the best vintages ever – adds Cellaias it was in 1985, 1990, 2001 and 2016. The climate, in fact, was optimal, both in spring and early summer, alternating the phenological phases in a perfect way so that the grapes could reach an almost ideal phenolic maturity. And this happened both in Tuscany and in Sicily”.

The 4 estates are currently harvesting the earliest white and red grapes such as Merlot and Syrah. “Right from the first stages of fermentation – underlines Cellaithe musts have an excellent structure and, at the same time, a great balance, characteristics that we find both in Feudi del Pisciotto and Gurra di Mare estates, in Sicily, and in Castellare di Castellina and Rocca di Frassinello estates, in Tuscany”.

Another strong point of the wines resulting from the 2020 harvest will be the colors which, already from the pressing, show exceptional intensity and tones. As for the yields of the vineyards, they seem to be in line with those of the 2019 vintage. “Our quality principles – explains Cellai provide for a charge per vine, measured in order to bring the necessary and desired concentration into each cluster. That’s the only way to achieve the best results”.
