I SODI DI S. NICCOLO’ AT THE NEW YORK WINE EXPERIENCE 2023 ORGANIZED BY WINE SPECTATOR

Protagonist of the luncheon was the Historical Super Tuscans Committee, an association that brings together the 16 wines born with the lowest designation (table wines) when the Chianti Classico regulations required white grapes to be vinified together with red grapes. It was in 1968 when the first Super Tuscan was produced at S. Felice, a name given by the American press to convey that these were exceptional wines. Following S. Felice’s Vigorello, Antinori produced Tignanello, and subsequently, the other 14 wines that are part of the association. Since 1994, the year in which the IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) designation was created, Super Tuscans are no longer table wines but IGT wines. At the New York Wine Experience, of the 16 wines belonging to the HST association, 10 from the 2019 and 2020 vintages were tasted, all awarded by Wine Spectator with scores ranging from 90 to 96/100. Among them, I Sodi di S. Niccolò 2019 by Castellare di Castellina that got 96 points. Below the wines tasted:
  • Isole e Olena – Cepparello
  • Antinori – Tignanello
  • Brancaia – Il Blu
  • Castellare di Castellina – I Sodi di S. Niccolò
  • Castello di Ama – L’Apparita
  • Fattoria di Fèlsina – Fontalloro
  • Castello di Volpaia – Balifico
  • Mazzei – Concerto di Fonterutoli
  • San Felice – Vigorello
  • Castello di Monsanto – Sangioveto Grosso Toscana Fabrizio Bianchi
Today, all 16 wines of the association are at the pinnacle of the wine world and thus serve as ambassadors for the high quality of Chianti Classico wines, which are celebrating 100 years of history this year. These wines are made from native grape varieties such as Sangioveto and Malvasia nera or (mostly) blended with international grape varieties.

The President of the HST Association, Paolo Panerai, who produces I Sodi di S. Niccolò at Castellare di Castellina, also speaking on behalf of the honorable founder of the association, Marquis Piero Antinori, told the history of the association during the event. He thanked Marvin Shenken, Wine Spectator publisher and editor-in-chief, as well as senior editors Bruce Sanderson and Alison Napjus, for featuring the tasting of the Historical Super Tuscan wines as the most important highlight of the New York Wine Experience 2023.
